Downsides of BlueVPS

One of the downsides is that they don’t offer shared web hosting, however, their cheapest VPS plan that starts at $2.69 per month is a good alternative.

Another downside is that their website is fairly new and it doesn’t have enough information about the services they offer, the support, the team itself, the company’s history, etc.

Some of their hosting plans use HDD. This is not really a downside since you have other options (SSD and NVMe). It may actually be an upside having an extra cheaper option if you don’t mind using HDD.

These 3 may not be a big deal when deciding if you should go with BlueVPS or not.

I maintain a website for a small non profit. They would like to implement an online store now that we don’t have nearly the same foot traffic inside the building as we did pre-pandemic. I know a managed plan will cost more (we currently pay $100/yr for our hosting), and being a non-profit I want to make sure we’re spending our money wisely and not dumping it into a crappy host.

We’re in the US and we get about 9,000 unique visitors a month, so nothing crazy, and the store would be small, basically a few items with different color and size options.

My number one concern is the security of the site, especially after I’m gone. They’ll also likely need good, reliable customer service.

For budget, obviously cheaper is better, but I know cheaper price also often equates to cheaper product. I’m hoping to be able to keep hosting under $200 a year/$15 a month.

I’ve looked at a bunch of hosts so far, and the ones that stick out are SiteGround and GreenGeeks, however as I look into them I see mixed reviews. Would either of these two be a good choice? Are there any others that would be a good fit? Is there anything that I’m not thinking about that I should? I want to get all the details hammered out before I take this to the board.

ETA: The site isn’t a big resource hog. We’re only using 5.5 gb for our site and all our backups. Our bandwidth usage is usually fluctuates between 7 and 13 gb a month. Rocket has one of the best user interfaces

Their dashboard/platform/control panel/user interface, or however you’d call it (they call it Mission Control) is one of the best and easiest we’ve tried so far, and we’ve tried many. It’s intuitive and perfect for beginners.

Creating a site can be done within a minute. Choose a site name and server location, set up the admin email and password and that’s it.

Once the site is created, you can use Mission Control to manage the website. This includes:

  • Activating, deactivating, deleting, and updating plugins and themes straight from the control panel. This is where their control panel is perfect and easy to use. All of this can be done with a single click and right from the panel, without even accessing wp-admin.
  • Creating a staging site. Again, with a single click.
  • Managing backups (daily and on-demand). Restoring from a backup can be done with a single click.
  • Visitors analytics.
  • Managing FTP accounts.
  • Changing PHP versions, creating cron jobs, etc.

Rocket pricing

They’re not the cheapest and not even in the mid-range, but you get what you pay for. Considering all the features and the kind of support you get, their pricing is justified and worth it, especially for beginners or just people that want their managed hosting done right.

What we don’t like about Rocket

There’s plenty of things we like about Rocket, but here’ what we don’t.

The pretty large list of pre-installed and pre-activated plugins.

When you create a site, a bunch of plugins get installed (and some even activated) by default. As of writing, there’s no option to disable these during the install, you’ll have to manually go over and deactivate or delete them. It just seems like bloat.

Their reasoning is to make it easier for beginners, but even then, when you’re forcing a certain plugin onto a new site when there are (maybe) better alternatives, it’s a turn-off. Lots of WordPress users may disagree with this specific list of plugins and rather have the alternatives.

Disabling and/or deleting them takes seconds, but still.

Some plugins are not even necessary and require extra configurations, like OptinMonster, so enabling it by default may deter beginners rather than help them out.

They’re working on a feature that enables you to change the pre-installed plugins list, so this can be avoided in the future. Having a list of plugins and themes that you regularly use and install on all websites would be a perfect feature to have. We all have our list of plugins that we install and activate on all new sites, and it takes (a bit) of time, but having it done by default on all new sites would be great.

The pricing is expensive, but again, you get what you pay for and it is justifiable. If you need cheap, you’ll have to sacrifice something, be it speed, support, or just features. You don’t sacrifice anything with this kind of pricing though.

If they fix the plugin thing it may be the first host we like everything about.


We definitely recommend Rocket for everyone, but especially beginners. Try them out, test their support’s response times (which is fast btw), try their Mission Control, and we bet you’ll like it.

Moving to PHP 7.3 and Managed PHP Updates

An update of our default server PHP version is planned for February 26, 2020. We are going to move forward to PHP 7.3. The version has been around long enough and has already become widely compatible with different CMS’s, themes and plugins. With PHP 7.3 we will be also introducing our new Managed PHP service. Its purpose is to automatically update the PHP version of all users that are currently relying on our choice of default server PHP.

How is the Managed PHP update different than what we did before?

When a new PHP version appears, its adoption in our system usually consists of two phases: first, making the version available on our servers, and second, making it the default one. Below, I will describe how these phases used to happen before and what will change with the new service:

Making the new PHP version AVAILABLE on all servers

We have always been among the first hosting providers to make every new PHP version available immediately  after its introduction by the PHP developers, sometimes even while it is still in RC state. This allows our most advanced and impatient users to start testing their websites and tweak them, to get the benefits of the new PHP version as soon as possible. Using the new PHP version at this stage of our update process is a question of personal choice and is made possible by our server setup that allows different PHP versions to be set for different parts of your website. 

This phase of the update process will remain unchanged with the new Managed PHP service.

Making the new PHP version the DEFAULT choice on all servers

For most of our clients it is safe to start using a new PHP version only after their website software becomes compatible with it. In the case of main website applications, like WordPress for example, this usually happens quite fast. However, there are thousands of plugins whose developers may need more time to update their code and become ready to take advantage of the new PHP version. Sometimes, if a plugin is not compatible, switching to the new PHP version can result in a malfunction of the whole site, even if its main application is ready. That is why it takes some time from the moment a new PHP version is released to the moment when it is safe to apply it massively on the servers. We closely monitor the stability and compatibility levels and make the decision for the default server PHP change, when this is safe for the highest possible percentage of the people. 

So far we have been conservative about this step of the process and changing the default server version only affected the newly created accounts on our servers. This meant that our existing customers using the older versions were only advised to change to the new one, as it is the one we consider to be the best at the moment, but it was not changed for them. 

As during the years this strategy has led to quite a few websites remaining on an obsolete PHP version, we have now decided to be more proactive at this stage and automatically update the PHP version of all existing users, that do not have a custom PHP version set. 

How does the Managed PHP work?

All new sites created on our servers after December 2019 have been created with a Managed PHP service switched on. We have also switched it on automatically for older sites and folders that were using the default PHP version on their host server. You may check if your site will be automatically updated in your PHP manager.

For cPanel users: Login to cPanel > go to PHP manager > click on the folder you wish to check. If you see the Managed PHP version selected, this means that we will update your PHP automatically.

For Site Tools users: Login to Customer Area > Websites > Site Tools > Devs > PHP Manager. You can check if the version will be updated automatically for your main domain and each of your subdomains. 

Manual management option

If you were using a manually set PHP version for any folder or site, we have not switched the Managed PHP service on for this folder/site. Although we highly recommend that the Managed PHP service is used at all times, we understand that there are cases, where you may not want to be automatically updated. You can switch to manual PHP management at any time for any of your folders/sites.

For cPanel users: Login to cPanel > go to PHP manager > click on the folder whose PHP version you wish to choose to manage manually. Select the desired PHP version. 

For Site Tools users: Login to Customer Area > Websites > Site Tools > Devs > PHP manager. Use the pencil to switch to manual PHP management. 

Email notification before the planned change

Each time we decide to change the default server version we will send an email notification to inform all users about the upcoming change. This will allow enough time for users to test the new version and even switch off the managed PHP service and its automatic update, if they want to. 

When will we switch to PHP 7.3? 

We are currently sending out email notifications to our customers for the upcoming switch and we expect that the first managed PHP update on our servers will happen on 26, February, 2020.

You’ve probably already heard about them. You’ve either already heard about their maintenance hub, one of their plugins, their support forums, or one of their extensive blog posts. They’re a popular platform and already well-known among the WordPress community. The plugin portfolio by WPMU DEV includes plugins that are some of the most used plugins in WordPress overall, which include an SEO plugin, an image optimization plugin, and more. They have a hub where you can manage any WordPress sites, hosted at any other host. Take backups, update plugins and themes, track uptime, and more. You don’t even have to use their own hosting platform to use the hub.

One of their recently introduced membership features is the WPMU DEV WordPress hosting. If you’re a member, you can host 3 sites at their platform for free.

We’ll go in detail and review their hosting platform below. We won’t focus much on the hub or other features, there are plenty of other good reviews about them.

The WPMU DEV Hosting Dashboard

The hosting dashboard (control panel/hub) is one of the easiest and most user-friendly platforms we’ve come across. You can spin up a new site in seconds. Everything you need to manage can be done with a couple of clicks, including changing your PHP version, taking backups, creating SFTP/SSH accounts…You can even analyze your site’s analytics right from the hub.

WPMU DEV Hosting Features

Their hosting platform is pretty feature-rich. We’ll go over some of the features:

  • A staging environment where you can create new staging sites with a single click. It’s usually a bit more complicated with other hosts. You can even push the staging site to production or reset it with a single click.
  • You can manage your database via phpMyAdmin, without having to log in each time, it’s easily accessible with a single click.
  • A free domain is included (yourdomain.wpmudev.host), but you can add your own custom domain via the dashboard.
  • You can create separate SFTP and SSH accounts for each site.
  • A password-protect feature where the site is hidden from visitors and can only be accessed with a password. This is really handy if you’re still working on a site, and want to hide it from the outside world. You don’t have to install any extra “under construction” plugins. A password can be added with a single click via the dashboard.
  • If you have a site added to the hub, but isn’t hosted at WPMU DEV, you can migrate the site to the WPMU DEV hosting via their platform.
  • The Analytics tab can be used to track views and used bandwidth, get live stats for CPU and RAM usage, live stats for PHP request, etc.
  • and more. You can get a free trial and explore their features. There are more features that are included in their hub, but are not a specific part of their hosting control panel, like updating plugins and themes, monitoring uptime, a white-label feature where all plugin names can be renamed and the WPMU DEV branding can be hidden from your clients, etc.

The WPMU DEV membership starts at $49 per month and includes all their plugins, the site management hub, and 3 free Bronze sites.

After the first 3 sites, the sites will be pilled per month, per site. There’s a 30-day free trial when you first sign up.

Speed test

As per usual with other hosts, we did a simple speed test on a default WordPress site without making any changes.

The homepage fully loaded in 1.2 seconds, which is a great result, better than most other hosts.

If you get a better plan or tweak the image compression, CDN, and caching more, you’ll get better results. WPMU DEV has great tutorials on their site.

Pros and Cons of WPMU DEV Hosting

Here are the pros and cons of the WPMU DEV hosting platform, in short:


  • The support team is super helpful and fast to respond. They are available 24/7 and reply within seconds via live chat. Aside from getting help with your hosting, you can also request support for anything related to WordPress, outside of the products WPMU DEV offer. So you can contact their 24/7 support for literally any WordPress-related issue, doesn’t have to be related to their hosting or plugins. This is an awesome feature that not many hosts have. Most will only support your hosting account and not actual WordPress issues that are not related to any of their products. When creating a ticket, there’s an option to make the ticket public, which can be accessed by the community and gives you better chances of solving your issue if you have the help of the entire WPMU DEV community.
  • The control panel (dashboard) is super-easy to use. Most things can be done with a single click, while all can be done with a couple of clicks max. One of the easiest platforms we’ve seen. It’s feature-rich, yet easy to use.
  • You get actual cloud hosting (powered by DigitalOcean) with dedicated resources, hence the fast sites.
  • There are server locations available around the world, including the US, UK, Canada, Netherlands, Germany, India, and Singapore.
  • An SSL and a CDN are included by default for free.
  • You’ll get a dedicated IP with each site for free. Perfect for many reasons.
  • Caching is included and enabled on all sites by default, for free.


  • There’s no built-in file manager with a GUI. If you’re a beginner you might find it hard to use an SFTP account to access your file system.
  • You get some WPMU DEV plugins installed by default. This can go either way, some people may actually consider this a Pro. When creating a site, 4 plugins get installed and enabled by default. Defender Pro, Hummingbird Pro, Smush Pro, and WPMU DEV Dashboard. You need the last one to use the hub with all of its features, but you may not want the other 3.
  • Pricing can be pretty expensive if you only need the WPMU DEV hosting. Membership starts at $49 per month and includes 3 free Bronze sites. If you want their plugins and the maintenance platform, then it’s a great deal. If you need a better hosting plan you’ll need to pay upwards of $25 per month per site on top of the membership fee. You get what you pay for after all.
  • There’s no option for user/access control, as in creating a sub-user for a client or a developer. There are workarounds like creating an SFTP/SSH account and sharing the password or creating a WordPress admin account, but other managed WP hosting platforms do have the option to share access to separate users. Seems like they’re already working on a feature like this, but there isn’t any as of writing.

Conclusion on Our WPMU DEV Hosting Review

All in all – they’re a great option. Easy to use, fast cloud hosting with lots of features, especially if you decide to use their hub with all their plugins. Everything just fits and works perfectly. They aren’t the cheapest though, so if you expect quality support with lots of features, you’ve got to pay for it.

Bear in mind that this is still a fairly new hosting platform so you may notice some oddities here and there. Make sure to report them.
